ELA Curriculum
These units are listed in the order that they will be presented this school year. The scope and sequence of each unit varies in length and ELA Standards.
Habits: Students will learn all of the habits and expectations of outstanding reading. This unit will set the tone for the school year. Scholars will learn about their own reading habits, practice routines and procedures for our ELA class, and set goals for themselves as readers.
Unit 1-Literary Text: During this unit, students will learn the skills and strategies necessary to understand higher level literature. Students will read Bridge to Terabithia to dig deeper on their knowledge of characters, setting, and the twists and turns that authors include in plots. The strategies they learn during this unit will help them attack fictional text independently all school year.
Unit 2-American Revolution: Students will read various historical documents to ask questions and think about this era in American History through a critical lens.
Unit 3-Poetry: Student will learn about the rhythm, imagery, figurative language, mood, and tone of poetry.
Unit 4-IFL Immigration Unit: Students will delve into Chinese American immigration. They will read stories from various perspectives, learn about the history of Chinese immigration, and think critically to ask questions about this time in American history.
Unit 5-Genre Review: At this point in the school year, students will review the genres that they encountered and will continue to practice the skills and strategies of critical readers and thinkers they have learned so far.
Unit 6-Humans and the Environment: Students will read texts about different environmental issues and their causes to learn ways that humans effect the environment, negatively or positively.
Unit 7-Summer Success: Students will learn about the importance of setting summer goals an creating a plan to continue their individual growth as readers over the summer.
